Gio Gonzalez delivered 5 2/3 effective innings in his first Brewers start and was backed by home runs from Travis Shaw and Christian Yelich in a 4-3 win over the Giants at Miller Park. It was a promising restart for Gonzalez, who struggled to a 6.55 ERA in his final eight starts for the Nationals before the Brewers picked him up in an Aug. 31 trade to add depth and experience to their rotation. The Brewers extended their lead in the National League Wild Card race to 2 1/2 games over the Cardinals.
